Two rollovers hinder highway traffic south of PR Tuesday

Two rollover crashes on Highway 71 south of Park Rapids clogged traffic on the major north-south highway Tuesday night.

The first, a single vehicle rollover about 4:45 p.m., occurred when Abigail P. Jokela, 17, of Osage, “started braking for a vehicle that pulled out in front of her from a business driveway,” said the Minnesota State Patrol.

“She lost control on the icy road from braking and went into northbound ditch and rolled over onto its roof,” the Patrol report stated. Jokela had been northbound on the highway. She was not injured. Her Ford Contour was extensively damaged.

The second crash occurred shortly after that when Phillip P. Waktins, 34, of Park Rapids, was southbound on the highway.

As he braked to get around the rollover accident, the Patrol said, “he lost control, crossed over to the oncoming lane and rolled over onto its roof in northbound ditch.

“The driver requested ambulance for a cut on his hand and was: transported by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Park Rapids,” the Patrol treport stated.

Watkins was driving a 1990 Subaru Legacy, which also sustained moderate damage.
