Zim man charged with 3 felonies in sledgehammer attack

A Zim man who allegedly attacked a Gilbert man with a sledgehammer is charged with three felonies.

Justin Kenneth Rae, 21, is charged with first-degree assault-great bodily harm, second-degree assault and first-degree burglary.

According to the criminal complaint:

Officers responded to an assault call on the 4,700 block of French Avenue in Gilbert shortly after noon on Nov. 30. Entering the house, an officer found the victim lying on his back on the kitchen floor with several articles of clothing wrapped around his head. There was blood on the victim and the floor around him. Rae's mother came in from the living room holding a sledgehammer.

"Justin hit him with this. I can't believe he did this," she told an officer, adding that the victim and Rae argued because Rae was not supposed to be at the house. After her son grabbed the hammer and hit the victim in the head, she jumped between the two.

Officers followed footprints from the house to a neighboring residence, where they found and arrested Rae. He is being held in the St. Louis County Jail. His initial appearance on the charges is scheduled for Dec. 17.

A search of Minnesota court records for Rae found convictions for theft of a motor vehicle, burglary, obstructing legal process and speeding. He also is facing charges of possession of drugs, disorderly conduct and theft in three separate cases filed earlier this year.
