PR man charged with drunk driving in 7:15 a.m. crash

Cody Charles Olson

A Park Rapids man charged in a rollover crash Nov. 12 underwent surgery Monday and missed his court date.

Cody Charles Olson, 21, was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when his truck slid across Highway 4 at 7:15 in the morning, striking another vehicle head-on. Olson's southbound truck subsequently rolled in the east ditch near the Ark Animal Hospital north of Park Rapids.

Authorities on the scene initially thought patchy ice had contributed to the crash and called for sanding trucks.

A blood-alcohol test later showed Olson alcohol level to be .109 percent, according to the complaint. Olson and the northbound driver he hit, Gary Korsgaden, were both taken to St. Joseph's Area Health Services.

Olson is charged with two counts of Criminal Vehicular Operation, one count with an alcohol concentration above the legal limit causing bodily harm and the other count charging Criminal Vehicular Homicide or Operation. Both charges are gross misdemeanors punishable by a maximum of 1 year in jail and/or a $3,000 fine.

He additionally faces two counts of Fourth Degree DWI, each carrying a maximum of 90 days and/or a $1,000 fine upon conviction.

Olson's next court appearance is set for Dec. 3.

"This is all a sad commentary, one or two people could have been killed because of a drunk driver, people need to always be reminded that alcohol impaired driving is occurring in the morning as well as any other time of day," Korsgaden e-mailed the Enterprise Saturday.
