Signup begins for U of M Master Gardener classes to be offered in 2013

Signup has begun for HORT 1003 Master Gardener Core Course / Horticulture for the Home Garden. This is a series of University of Minnesota classes beginning in January 2013 on horticultural and environmental topics such as; soils, plant pathology and culture, entomology, herbaceous ornamentals, fruits and vegetables, trees & shrubs, and other related horticultural classes. Course content is research-based, taught by University experts and geared toward use in the home landscape.

Classes are open to Master Gardener interns. Face-to-face classes will be held at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen. Start date is Jan. 11 and continues through Feb. 2, 2013.

The classes are on Fridays and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $275 with a registration date by Dec. 1, 2012. All registration is done online.

The course is also available online. Online classes begin January 7, 2013 and continue thru May 2, 2013. Class topics and instructors change weekly.

A Master Gardener should exhibit an interest in or have knowledge of gardening and horticulture related area. A Master Gardener should be able to work with adults and youth and have a willingness to share horticulture knowledge with others.

First year interns are required to complete the "core courses" offered and complete a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer work. In the subsequent years a minimum of 25 hours of volunteer hours are needed with a minimum of 5 hours of continuous education. Certified Master Gardener volunteers provide educational programs, interpret Extension recommendations for consumers and give advice and answers to questions on a broad range of gardening and landscape topics.
