Firefighters battle blaze ignited by fireworks in Straight River Township

Two young children playing with fireworks reportedly ignited a blaze at the Derek Knowles residence on 119th Avenue in southwest Straight River Township Wednesday afternoon.

According to Hubbard County Sheriff Cory Aukes, a tree started on fire, prompting the call received at 1:01 p.m.

Park Rapids firefighters, with Menahga providing mutual aid, and the DNR arrived at the scene. Approximately five acres of a pine plantation burned, according to the deputy on scene.

A helicopter was initially called but cancelled when firefighters were able to control it.

The incident is under investigation.
