A half century + of Girl Scouts service

Nancy Rutherford

Nancy Rutherford, of Park Rapids, has received a commendation for 54 years of dedication to Girl Scouts in the area.

The award was issued by the Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin Lakes and Pines Service Unit 2.

Rutherford was a Girl Scout through 12th grade and continues to be active as a volunteer in several capacities over the years.

"The best part is watching girls grow from being shy to very outgoing and confident," she said. "To me, it's just a wonderful program."

Rutherford had two daughters who were involved in Girl Scouts and that kept her involved in the program.

"It's in my blood," she said of the Girl Scouts program.

Over the years she has volunteered as a leader, been a member of the council and on the board. She was also a Service Unit 2 manager in charge of all the troops in the area.

During her 54 years of participation in Girl Scouts, she has attended several national conventions from Detroit, Miami, Portland and Minneapolis to name a few. The national conventions were memorable with speakers such as Barbara Bush or Maya Angelou.

"For me, it's fun to encourage the girls to work hard and try new things and become confident young ladies," she said.

Since she has been involved in Girl Scouts for many years she has had several mothers and daughters as young girls in her troop.

Rutherford plans to continue her involvement in local Girl Scouts activities.
