Malicious punishment charges dismissed in Becker County child case

Felony charges of third degree assault (victim under 4 years of age) and malicious punishment of a child against a Waubun man were dismissed Thursday by Becker County District Court.

Travis Brandon Parisian, 21, of 2586 State Highway 113, Waubun, was accused after a Becker County Human Services worker who was conducting a home visit on Jan. 19 noticed that a 1½-year old child living there had a split lip with dried blood on it.

Upon questioning the mother, she was told that the child had been assaulted by the woman's live-in boyfriend, Parisian, on Jan. 17 at the home they shared in Ogema.

According to the complaint, Parisian had allegedly become angry and picked up the child by the hair, throwing her on the bed and striking her in the face.

When the mother yelled at him for hurting the child, he allegedly ordered them both to leave the residence. The mother said she had not reported the incident out of fear of the defendant.

According to the order for dismissal filed May 10, the charges were dismissed because evidence obtained as the result of further investigation into the incident called into doubt the prosecution's ability to "successfully prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant was the one who committed the offense."
