Woman starts jail sentence for DWI crash

Candace Dawn Eskelson

A Park Rapids woman reported to the Hubbard County jail Monday to begin serving time for an alcohol-related rollover that injured her only.

Candace Dawn Eskelson, 24, was transported to the hospital July 31 following a crash on County Road 87 south of Park Rapids.

An eyewitness said Eskelson's vehicle was weaving and speeding when it left the roadway and "shot off into the woods."

A blood test indicated a .22 percent alcohol content.

Eskelson was trapped in her vehicle. "The vehicle sustained severe damage and the occupant was lying upside down with her hair trapped under the vehicle," she State Patrol report indicated.

Under a plea deal negotiated Nov. 28, Eskelson will spend 10 days in jail with credit for one day served. The remainder of a one-year sentence will be stayed four years.

She must get a chemical dependency evaluation and follow its recommendations, refrain from any drug or alcohol use, stay out of bars and liquor stores and remain law0-abiding while she is on probation.

She pled guilty to one count of Third Degree DWI. A second count was dismissed.

The accident caused weekend traffic to snarl while emergency crews worked to extricate Eskelson from the wreckage.

The accident occurred at a major intersection, where Highway 87 meets Hubbard County 6.
