The spirit of the season has descended on Main Avenue; Evergreen Gifts has moved its unique holiday collection - Halloween and Christmas - into town.

Evergreen Gifts and Fun Park on Highway 71 North has closed for the season, as has Athletic Leftovers on Main.

Voila! Witches' hats and skeletons, Santas and nativity sets replace discount shoes - temporarily. Athletic Leftovers will return, come spring.

While traffic dropped with the leaves on Highway 71 north, "we noticed traffic remained in Park Rapids," owners Tom and Barb Atwood said.

"We took what was appropriate for the season, along with new merchandise," Tom Atwood said, and opened Holiday Gift Express at 118 Main Ave. South.

The store stirs the imagination with high-style witches' hats, beanies and skeltons - a nurse and doctor ready to treat what ails.

Traditional and contemporary Christmas décor awaits, including the German Christmas pickle. According to tradition, the pickle is hidden in the tree, the one finding it has luck for a year.

Fontanini nativity and Willow Tree sets are available. Stockings are ready to be hung by the chimney - with care.

Patrons may choose personalized ornaments, jewelry, music boxes, cozy throws, along with a sports section, for college teams and Panther fans alike.

Kids' imaginations will be tickled with finger puppets, piggy banks and sock monkeys.

A variety of games, including Super Scrabble, is on display as are wine accessories and picnic baskets - "a great wedding present."

"And there are new arrivals all the time."

Holiday Gift Express is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with expanded hours to begin after Thanksgiving.
