Weekend ATV accidents, fire reported

Two ATV accidents and a fire kept Hubbard County authorities busy Saturday afternoon.

Chief Dep. Scott Parks said one of the ATV accidents, a rollover on Highway 64 north of Akeley, was never located by emergency crews.

North Memorial Ambulance personnel pulled onto the side of the highway awaiting directions about 2:15 p.m. Saturday.

"I don't know if we ever found that because I don't have any details," Parks said. About 2:30, Parks said the call was canceled.

Around 2:45 p.m. an off-highway motorcycle driven by a 17-year-old boy went out of control on the Spur #2 Forest Trail in Thorpe Township as he was rounding a curve. The cycle hit a stump and the juvenile was transported by a private party to St. Joseph's Area Health Services with a wrist injury, Parks said. There was no damage to the motorcycle itself.

At 2:31 p.m. firefighters were called out to a blaze off Freedom Drive on Fish Hook Lake.

Park Rapids Fire Chief Donn Hoffman said the residents were burning brush when winds fanned the flames and the fire got away from them.

"Even with a burn permit, you can't burn before 6 p.m.," he said.

DNR firefighters also responded to the call.

The DNR said the burning situation changes daily. "Right now we're not issuing burning permits," said a woman at the DNR office in Park Rapid. "Just until it gets a little wetter. We're just kind of watching it on a day-by-day basis."
