Crookston man injured in Laporte soap box derby event

A Crookston man was treated and released from the Bemidji hospital July 2 after he lost control of the go kart he was driving and collided with a car in downtown Laporte.

Borge Mark Fisketjon, 64, was injured when the steering mechanism of his car apparently malfunctioned.

"He hit that car so hard," said Laporte mayor Craig Mackey, who was stunned at the accident along with dozens of eyewitnesses.

The city has an annual soapbox derby race with heats for children and adults. Fisketjon won the event last year, residents said.

"It was scary," Mackey said.

Three emergency medical technicians on the scene immediately rendered first aid.

Fisketjon was transported to Sanford Hospital in Bemidji where he was seen and released.

The soapbox car went out of control and struck the parked car near the race route, Mackey said.
