Hubbard County Fair returns today

As a busy Hubbard County weekend wraps up, another is just beginning.

Mow the grass, spruce up the town, water the flowers, because the 116th Hubbard County Fair, put on by the Shell Prairie Ag Association begins today.

It features the usual spills, thrills and chills today, July 6-10 in Park Rapids.

It will be a bittersweet event for many. Grand master Howard Warmbold, the consummate man behind the scenes for decades, passed away in January.

Fair board members say they still feel his presence among them as they go forward.

Tonight the Christian rock band "Ballast" performs to a temporary grandstand.

The one that stood for decades was a victim of the Memorial Day tornado.

Tomorrow, the talent show is at the grandstand. Both events begin at 7 p.m. Comedian C. Willi Myles heads up the grandstand events Friday night at 7. And the weekend features a new souped up pickup truck pull Saturday at 6 p.m. and the demolition derby, the fair's signature event, Sunday at 1 p.m.

Last year two teenagers battled it out for winner of the compact heat, putting on a thrilling show for the packed stands.

The All American Midway operates all five days; Wrist Band days will be July 7, 8 and 10 where a $20 wrist band entitles fairgoers to unlimited rides.

And the 4-H exhibit hall will be home to chickens, bunnies, horses, pigs, sheep, goats and cattle throughout the week.
