Menahga Midsummer festivities announced for July 8-10

The annual Menahga Midsummer Festival is coming together, with the City Council approving a few of the final events at Monday's meeting.

The festival will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 8-10.

The council approved a permit for a beer garden by the Fire Relief Association pending all insurance requirements are in place, a permit for the fireworks display and a request to close First Street between the beach and the boat landing for the fireworks and a concert. Also, the intersection near the Post Office will be closed for the craft festival.

The Little Miss Menahga Pageant will kick off the festival at 7 p.m. Friday, July 8.

Saturday offers a variety of events. The day will begin with the 30th annual St. Urho 5K Walk and Run and 10K Run at 9 a.m. The race begins at the old baseball field and ends at the St. Urho statue.

Pre-register for the event at the Shell gas station, the Cenex store or by going to Registration ends at 8:30 a.m. the day of the event.

For those interested in arts and crafts, the Art and Craft Show will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Main Avenue.

Senior Men's (Old Timers) Baseball Tournament will begin between at 11 a.m. running all day and will take place at all three baseball fields.

Events especially for children will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the football field. Also, kid's inflatable games will be set up near Spirit Lake from 2 to 7 p.m.

A blueberry ice cream social is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the museum.

Horseshoe tournaments will be at 9 a.m. for singles and 1 p.m. for doubles at the city park.

At 1 p.m., head downtown to see the firemen's water fight that will continue until 3 p.m.

Evening events Saturday will begin with the Midsummer Festival Parade at 7 p.m., followed by the Firemen's Dance at 8:30 p.m. in the parking lot next to Northbound Spirits.

Fireworks will take place Saturday night at dusk on the shore of Spirit Lake. The UNL Drill & Dance Team will perform at the city beach prior to the fireworks.

Sunday morning the Lions Pancake Feed will be from 7 a.m. to noon at the city park. More events Sunday include:

A nondenominational church service at 9:30 a.m. down at the shores of Spirit Lake.

A Midsummer Sand and Mud 4 x 4 and ATV race is at 1 p.m. Sunday 1 ½ miles east of Menahga on County Road 21.

A Conservation Club Kids Fishing Derby at noon at the Spirit Lake fishing pier.

"Hardwood Groove" will perform a bluegrass concert at 1 p.m. at Spirit Lake.

Prize drawings are at 3 p.m. Sunday.

This year's grand prize is a 2011 red Chevrolet Aveo LS 5 door hatchback (from Dondelinger GM, Bemidji). The winner is responsible for the tax and license.

Tickets are $20 each. A limit of 2,000 tickets will be sold. Those who enter the drawing must be 18 years old to win. The drawing will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 10 at the Spirit Lake access. Ten additional prizes are available to win. Tickets are available from any Menahga C & C businesses and members.
