Becker County crime and accidents

The following items were taken from reports at the Detroit Lakes Police Department and Becker County Sheriff's Department:

Friday, May 27

• At 9:32 a.m. a man narrowly escaped injury on Big Floyd Lake when his fishing boat motor malfunctioned, causing him to be thrown over the side into the lake.

Craig Teal managed to swim to shore nearly half a mile in windy conditions and water temperatures in the mid-50s, said Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon.

He was out fishing in his newer-model Lund fishing boat with a Mercury outboard "big tiller" electro-hydraulic motor, which malfunctioned, causing rapid acceleration and a hard starboard turn that sent Teal overboard.

He was alone in the boat, which nearly ran him over before he could swim out of the way.

The boat circled until it eventually idled down and essentially came to a stop, Gordon said.

Teal's dog sat in the boat until it slowed down enough to be boarded and brought to shore, Gordon said.

• At 10:38 a.m. a man on the 22000 block of County Road 37 reported the theft of a pile of tin. Prior metal thefts had also occurred, he said.

Saturday, May 28

• At 11:52 p.m. officers arrested two people, a 36-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman, near Michael's Furniture.

The woman was allegedly yelling, swearing and interfering with officers. She was handcuffed and placed in the back of a squad car, where she tried to kick out a rear window. She was then placed in leg restraints. She yelled and swore all the way to jail, and her misbehavior continued there as well. She was charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing justice.

Sunday, May 29

• At 9 a.m., a 77-year-old woman was injured in an accident outside Holy Rosary Church.

Jean Marie Wanek was taken by St. Mary's EMS to the emergency room at Essentia Health St. Mary's Hospital. Her condition was not disclosed.

The accident occurred when a 2012 GMC Savanna van stopped northbound on Lake Avenue in front of Holy Rosary to drop off passengers.

Wanek was attempting to get out of a rear passenger seat when her hand got stuck in the door as it closed.

The van driver, Deen Joseph Wanek, 48, of Waterford, Wis., tried to reach over and open the passenger door to free her hand, but the van started to roll forward with her hand still caught in the door.

The driver then tried to brake, but accidentally accelerated instead, causing the woman to be dragged by the van, until she eventually fell from the van, causing her injuries.

The van then ran into a parked and unoccupied 2006 Kia owned by Laune Ann Hankedahl of Detroit Lakes.

• At 5:01 p.m. Trevor Daniel Fredrickson, 20, of Greenfield, Minn., was injured in an ATV accident in the Smoky Hills area. He was treated and released in Park Rapids for a shoulder injury.

• At 9:12 p.m. a Lake Park police officer reported there had been a residential break-in, with the back door broken to gain entrance.

Monday, May 30

• At 9:04 p.m. an accident with injuries was reported by the White Earth tribal police about 5 miles east of White Earth village. A man was taken to the hospital by private vehicle.
