Main Avenue details to be in place by Memorial Day weekend

Main Avenue streetscapes, including flower baskets, banners and granite inlays, should be in place by Memorial Day.

Although construction work continues on downtown side streets, with heavy machinery digging up old infrastructure, Main Avenue is starting to look complete.

The Park Rapids City Council gave its blessing for summer banners presented by the Downtown Business Association. The banners feature the slogan, "Positively Park Rapids," and include a simple flower design. The vinyl banners will complement flower baskets that will be placed before Memorial Day.

The DBA purchased the banners but has asked the city to maintain them, by putting them up and taking them down. No decision has been made about fall/winter banners.

Several of the granite inlays have been installed on the corners of Main Avenue but city administrator Bill Smith said some flaws have been identified.

"There are some flaws some, chipping," he said.

Smith said it appears the chipping happened during the shipping. He is checking with the designers to see if they can be fixed.

Also, he is checking with the installer to make sure the inlays are flat and are sealed thoroughly.

The rest of the inlays should be installed in the next week or so, Smith said.

The lake inlays were paid for by donations. Thedonor is stamped on the granite.
