Phase 2 of Main Avenue work to start Monday

Removal of asphalt and underground utilities on downtown Park Rapids side streets starts Monday, April 25.

Phase two of the Main Avenue reconstruction project includes 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 8th streets between Pleasant Avenue and Highway 71.

The side streets will be asphalt instead of concrete like Main Avenue. The tentative completion date for Phase two is June 30.

Crews will also be finishing up some of the Phase one work, including pavement markings, irrigation, street signs and light poles. Granite lake inlays will be placed throughout downtown, along with flag holders.

Due to a rough winter, there were some damages incurred on some of the curbs, sidewalks and the center median of Main Avenue.

"We should be open before tourist season," said project engineer Jon Olson.

Parking will be available along Main Avenue and along Highway 71 and Pleasant Avenue. City parking lots are also available.

The side streets will be completely blocked off to parking, Olson said.

Construction crews will be working with individual business owners about access issues. Some of the alleys will have work done as well, which means some businesses might be without rear access at some points.

The alley behind the Postal Office will be closed off and a temporary mail drop box will be located on Highway 71.

Weekly construction meetings will be held at 8 a.m. Thursdays at Bella Caffé.
