A nasty April Fool's Day joke greeted many motorists Friday morning in the Hubbard County region.

The Sheriff's Department's lone dispatcher was swamped with calls of accidents. She directed deputies, city police and State Patrol officers to a rollover west of Park Rapids, a collision with a power line east of the city and numerous other calls of motorists in the ditches.

A few inches of heavy slushy snow fell on the region and before plows could get it all moved, motorists traveling too fast for the conditions found themselves sliding sideways down area highways.

By afternoon the poor road conditions will be a distant memory.

The temperature should surpass 40 degrees both today and tomorrow, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks.
