Predatory offender gets 91 months for sex with minor
A Detroit Lakes man was sentenced to 91 months in prison for the repeated sexual contact with a teenage girl over several years.
"The offense you pleaded guilty to is one of the most piercing and crushing offenses that can be committed," Judge Robert Tiffany told Brian Warren Bebensee, 31.
"What you have done to this family has rendered them asunder."
Bebensee entered into a plea deal that resulted in several felonies being dismissed in exchange for a guilty plea to Third Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct.
Tiffany sentenced Bebensee to the upper range of the sentencing guidelines. The defendant's attorney, Blair Nelson of Bemidji, had requested 74 months.
"I don't think you can appreciate the damage you've done to this family," Tiffany told the defendant as the victims' family shed tears.
Bebensee had initially been charged with repeatedly engaging in sexual conduct with the victim and her younger sister but the charges involving the sibling were among those dismissed.
If Bebensee is a model prisoner, he will spend a minimum of 60 months behind bars with one-third of the sentence being served under supervised probation.
He will have to register as a predatory sex offender and submit a DNA sample for a national registry of sex offenders.
Bebensee apologized for "his acts. I've thought of it every day for the last year," he told the court.
He was arrested in September 2009 after the girls came forward. He admitted to 50 illegal contacts with the girl.
