Aukes launches sheriff's campaign into cyberspace

Cory Aukes has set up a campaign Facebook page to muster support in his run for Hubbard County Sheriff.

Sgt. Cory Aukes' quest to become Hubbard County's next sheriff has launched into cyberspace.

Aukes has set up a Facebook page for his run against Sheriff Frank Homer in the fall election.

He already has numerous fans, 352 to date, some of which may not be able to carry the day for him.

John Snelling wrote: "You are the man for the job. You got South Carolina support."

But only Hubbard County residents can cast a vote.

Facebook pages are a regular facet of everyday life, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that a candidate for political office can run a low-budget campaign that spreads like wildfire.

The site boasts Aukes picked up 177 fans in a 24-hour period.

Aukes, 39, is a 20-year veteran of the Hubbard County Sheriff's Department and a Park Rapids native. He is opposing Homer, who was appointed to fill the unexpired term of former Sheriff Gary Mills one year ago.
