Smokey Bear gives timely fire tips to Girl Scouts

Local Daisy, Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts gathered Saturday at the Shingobee Recreation Area, just east of Akeley, for a day-long camp. Activities centered around the theme "The Earth Matters to Girl Scouts." Smokey Bear's visit was a highlight. Participants showed their appreciation by giving Smokey a box of Girl Scout cookies. Troops 361, 330, 407, 348, 402, 833 and 681 were present. Pictured are front row, from left, Tegan Lippert, Natalie Harvey, Desi Condiff, Sara Ballard, Madison Robbins, Taylor ...1 / 2
Female firefighters with the U.S. Forestry Service, like Tashia Woodwick, above, gave tours of their fire trucks and answered questions about training and tools. Woodwick said she's lost count of the number of fires she's fought since 2001. She noted that some of her equipment was grimy from battling a blaze in Blackduck the night before.
