Pelican Rapids man ordered to repay $24,000 of funds he bilked father-in-law out of

A man who admitted to trying to bilk his father-in-law out of more than $100,000 has been ordered to pay back $24,000 in restitution, court records show.

Larry Anthony Villella of Pelican Rapids, Minn., and his wife, Catherine Sadler-Villella, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a felony charge of conspiracy to commit misapplication of entrusted property.

Villella was sentenced to 120 days in jail, while his wife got 60 days.

Both had faced additional charges of forgery and exploitation of a vulnerable adult amid accusations they exploited her father out of more than $100,000 and forged his signature on a guaranty to back more than $1 million in loans to finance business.

Sadler-Villella's share of the restitution was waived because she agreed to give up a hefty inheritance, said Tristan Van de Streek, an assistant state's attorney for Cass County.

The amount of Villella's restitution wasn't set until an order was filed in Cass County District Court on Friday. Van de Streek said $24,000 was less than the amount owed, but it was the maximum Villella would be able to pay.
