A driver pinned underneath his rolled vehicle died at the scene Wednesday afternoon and one passenger was critically injured.

The accident in Farden Township in the far north-east section of Hubbard County occurred just before 3 p.m. on a hilly, curved stretch of County Road 9 east of Nary. The Hubbard County Sheriff's department said speed was a factor as the 1995 Chevy Astro van failed to negotiate a curve.

The victim was identified as Bruce Anoka, 38, of Cass Lake. The airlifted passenger, Sally Yanez, 45, of Minneapolis, was taken to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale.

Kenneth Yanez, 26, Bemidji, and Joanna Bearheart, 25, McGregor, were taken by ambulance to North Memorial Hospital in Bemidji.

Several agencies responded to the crash scene, which blocked traffic until a medevac helicopter could load the woman.

The helicopter had to land in the middle of the roadway.

One passenger was being attended to on the roadside, while the vehicle was overturned in the opposite ditch.

"Nothing good came of this one," said one officer directing traffic.
