One person dies in Nevis house fire

A rural Nevis home was still smoldering Friday, hours after firefighters left the scene. One man died in the fire, reported early Thursday morning. (Sarah Smith / Enterprise)

At approximately 7:17 a.m. today, the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office received a call of a house fire located about four miles west of Nevis in Nevis Township.

Responding to the fire were officers from the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office, Nevis Fire Department, Akeley Fire Department and an investigator from the State Fire Marshal's Office.

Upon arrival, the structure was completely engulfed in flames. Through investigation, it was learned from family members that only one occupant had been living at the residence. After the fire was extinguished, investigators and firemen began sifting through the rubble and located the remains of one person.

The body was transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner for an autopsy and identification. Positive identity of the victim is pending the outcome of the autopsy.

This incident remains under investigation by the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office and the State Fire Marshal.
