Level 3 sex offender wanted by Becker County is arrested in California

Robert Baca

A Level 3 sex offender wanted in Becker County for failing to register has been arrested by federal agents in California.

Robert Thomas Baca, 44, caused a stir in Becker County when he announced his intention to move to the Detroit Lakes area after getting out of prison.

He served an 111-month term for raping a woman at his apartment house in Detroit Lakes in 1996.

Baca was the subject of a community notification meeting in Detroit Lakes Nov. 17, but he didn't stay in town long.

He left Detroit Lakes for St. Paul on Nov. 19. Detroit Lakes police watched him board a bus and leave, but he never checked in with St. Paul police as required.

He failed to check in with any police department, and on Dec. 12 he was charged in Becker County District Court with failing to register, a felony.

He was supposed to check in with police weekly wherever he was living.

Officers with the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Baca Tuesday night without incident near Anaheim, Calif., according to Detroit Lakes Police Investigator Chad Jutz.

The Marshals Service "was actively looking for him," Jutz said.

It's not clear at this point if Baca will be charged in California for failing to register.

California authorities will work with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Becker County Attorney's Office on the logistics of bringing Baca back to Detroit Lakes to face the felony charge against him in Becker County District Court.
