Lutzs, Deitchler earn all-conference honors in cross country

Lydia Lutz, Victoria Lutz and Tiffany Deitchler earned all-conference honors Thursday in leading the Park Rapids girls cross-country team to its best finish in the Mid-State Conference meet since 1994.

Lydia Lutz finished third, Victoria Lutz was fourth and Deitchler finished ninth as the Panthers finished second in the Mid-State meet at Deerwood with 58 points. Staples-Motley won is ninth consecutive conference title with 26 points. This was the best finish for the Panthers since winning the conference title in 1993 and finishing second in 1994.

Staples-Motley also won the boys title with 40 points. Pequot Lakes was second with 48 points while Park Rapids placed sixth with 160 points.

The Cardinals won the girls title as Naomi Lan-decker (first in 14 minutes, 59 seconds), Emma Pogreba (second in 15:54), Natasha Wentzel (fifth in 16:36) and Rachel Amiot (seventh in 16:39) all earned all-conference honors with top-10 showings.

Park Rapids easily earned runner-up honors on the 4,000-meter course as Lydia Lutz clocked a 15:56, Victoria Lutz clocked a 16:36 and Deitchler clocked a 16:41. Kayla Stursa finished 18th in 17:34 and Chelsea Johnson was 24th in 18:06 to round out the Panthers' team total.

The other all-conference runners were Crosby-Iron-ton's Christina Mapson, Wa-dena-Deer Creek's Kelsey Browne and Detroit Lakes' Chantel Pauquette.

In the boys meet, Jordan Bendson (fourth in 16:56), Josh Ulring (fifth in 17:12) and Joe Fuhrman (sixth in 17:13) led Staples-Motley to the title. Pequot Lakes was a close second led by Clayton Foster's winning time of 16:32 on the 5,000-meter course.

Park Rapids was led by Derek Werner (26th in 19:02), Bryce Klasen (28th in 19:23), Isaac Zoller (32nd in 19:34), Kyle McBrady (35th in 22:05) and Mike McDowell (36th in 22:11).

Rounding out the list of all-conference runners were Crosby-Ironton's Peter Vu-kelich and Keegan Leonard, Wadena-Deer Creek's Cory Asfeld, Pequot Lakes' Silas Lydeen and Kellen Braren, and Detroit Lakes' Matt Weiss.

The Panthers hosted their annual Park Rapids Invitational Monday and will prepare for the Section 8A meet at Hawley on Oct. 26.
