Weather cooperating, final asphalt layer will be laid

The final layer of asphalt, the wear course, on High-way 34 could be done with three good days of weather, a spokesman for Central Specialties, Alexandria, general contractor for the project, said at Thursday's contractor's meeting.

This week crews were working to "lift iron" (raise manhole covers) and doing other work, including con-crete sidewalks and drive-ways.

The contractor has changed his mind on how traffic will be routed when the wear course is laid, said Larry Randall, Minnesota Department of Transporta-tion project supervisor. The north side will be finished first with traffic continuing to be routed onto the south lanes. Then the final surface will be added on the south lanes with traffic routed north.

After that, the surface will be striped.

The detour on Highway 34 east will remain in place until the wear course is fin-ished there as well.

Weekly construction meetings are at 1 p.m. Thursdays at the Park Rap-ids Area Library, located at 210 West 1st St.
