Panthers debut with 1-2 record

Holly Roepke won all three of her matches while Megan Lawrence and Julia Kujawa posted 2-1 records as the Park Rapids girls tennis team opened the season by winning one of three dual meets.

The Panthers opened their dual-meet schedule with a 5-2 loss at Fergus Falls Tuesday before splitting matches at Sauk Centre with a 5-2 win over Sauk Centre and a 5-2 loss to Yellow Medicine East.

"We had a lot of close matches," said Park Rapids head coach Nicole Brandt. "We have a lot of girls in new spots and they're doing a great job of stepping up."

Otters defeat Panthers

Fergus Falls won two doubles matches in the third set to pull off a 5-2 win Tuesday.

Lawrence won in straight sets at No. 1 singles and Roepke posted a straight-set win at No. 2 singles to account for the Panthers' two points.

Panthers split matches

The Panthers won four matches in third-set tie-breakers to defeat Sauk Centre, but managed to extend only one match into a third set in the loss to YME.

Megan Lawrence lost only two games at No. 1 singles while Roepke and Julia Kujawa prevailed with third-set tiebreaker wins to lead the Panthers in singles against Sauk Centre.

In doubles play, Mindy Lawrence and Mary Kading won in three sets at the No. 1 spot and Alyssa Klingen-berg and Alyssa Carlson prevailed at the No. 2 position by rallying for the win in a tiebreaker.

Against YME, Roepke prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles while Kujawa posted a straight-set win at No. 4 singles.

Invitational rained out

Rain prevented completion of the Park Rapids Invitational last Saturday.

Megan Lawrence went 1-1 at No. 1 singles, Roepke went 1-0 at No. 2 singles, Allison Lempola went 1-1 at No. 3 singles, Kujawa went 1-1 at No. 4 singles, Mindy Lawrence and Kading went 1-2 at No. 1 doubles, Klingenberg and Carlson went 1-1 at No. 2 doubles, and Rachel Thelen and Dena Johanning went 1-1 at No. 3 doubles before the meet was called off.

East Grand Forks, Fergus Falls, Minnewaska Area, Moorhead, Roseau, Thief River Falls and Wadena-Deer Creek joined Park Rapids in this eight-team tournament.
