DETROIT LAKES, Minn. - One man died in a fire at Edgewater Condominiums near the Detroit Lakes City Park on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 25. The victim was identified as William McGrath, 72, of Detroit Lakes, Minn.
The fire was located in a living room on the third floor of the Edgewater Condominiums on the northeast side of the building.
The incident was reported at 2:30 p.m. Saturday as a fire with heavy smoke showing.
Detroit Lakes firefighters and police officers responded to the scene, according to Assistant Detroit Lakes Fire Chief Todd George.
Residents were evacuated from the building and firefighters extinguished the fire.
The fire's damage was contained to the single unit involved, however smoke damage affected several other parts of the building, according to WDAY News.
Becker County deputies and the Becker County Emergency Manager assisted at the scene.
American Red Cross and the Salvation Army helped the displaced residents with housing and assistance.
McGrath's body was taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
