Update: State Patrol releases names involved in fatal crash near Menahga

A Menahga man died in a two-vehicle crash just outside of Menahga on Friday morning. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Randall Lee Hinz, 66, of Menahga died in the head-on collision which occurred about 9 a.m. one mile north of Menahga on U.S. Highway 71 at 370th Street. The driver of the other vehicle was identified as 31-year-old Timothy Wade McKenna of New York Mills. He suffered life threatening injuries and was airlifted to a Twin Cities hospital.

According to the State Patrol, Hinz was driving a 2015 Honda Civic and traveling southbound on Highway 71 when the car crossed the centerline and struck McKenna who was traveling northbound in a 2004 Chevy Express van.

Hinz was pronounced dead at the scene. McKenna reportedly suffered a broken leg and lacerations among other life threatening injuries and was flown from the scene. Hinz’s car came to a final position of upright on the west shoulder of the road. McKenna's van left the road in the west ditch and struck a tree as a result of the head-on collision.

There were no passengers in either vehicle involved in the crash. Hinz was wearing a seatbelt and McKenna was not, according to the State Patrol report. Airbags did deploy in both vehicles.

The Minnesota State Patrol, Wadena County Sheriff's Office, Menahga Fire Department, Tri-County Hospital, North Memorial Air Care, and Menahga Police Department responded to the scene.

Highway 71 was closed following the accident and traffic diverted while emergency personnel worked at the scene.
