Secretary Simon to begins two-day swing through Northwest Minnesota

Secretary of State Steve Simon will begin the first of a two-day swing through Northwest Minnesota. Secretary Simon will make stops in six counties, including Hubbard County, to meet with local election officials and discuss his successful push to help replace Minnesota’s aging election equipment.

He will also meet with economic development and city officials and highlight the Minnesota Business Snapshot, a new initiative designed to better serve Minnesotans.

Secretary Simon will meet with county election officials in Hubbard, Beltrami, Red Lake and Pennington counties. Secretary Simon is meeting with Hubbard County Auditor Kay Rave on Wednesday. These meetings will be an opportunity to hear from local election officials on the administration of the 2016 election, as well as highlight his successful push to help replace Minnesota’s aging election equipment. In the aftermath of the 2000 Florida presidential recount and the controversy surrounding state election equipment (i.e. hanging chads), Congress passed the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) in 2002 and provided one-time federal funds to purchase election equipment to all 50 states. That election equipment, which has a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, is aging and needs to be replaced.

Secretary Simon will meet with city and economic development officials in Bagley and Warren. These meetings will be an opportunity to hear about issues from local business communities and to highlight the work his office is doing to help small business owners and entrepreneurs; as well as the work being done to streamline business services so Minnesotans can spend more time running their businesses and less time shuffling paperwork. For example, Secretary Simon recently launched the Minnesota Business Snapshot, a new initiative designed to better serve Minnesotans. To date, over 141,000 businesses have taken part in the Minnesota Business Snapshot, which recently began offering custom economic and demographic data.
