Search leads to recovering former Warren man, 1 of 3 missing boaters on Lake of the Woods


 One of the three boaters missing on the Lake of the Woods has been found.

Searchers found Justin Kelly Haugtvedt, 22, Baudette, in about 14 feet of water, Lake of the Woods County Sheriff Gary Fish said in a news release issued shortly before midnight Friday. 

Sheriff's deputies and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources recovered Haugtvedt's body at 5:07 p.m. in the southwest area of Oak Island after using a side scan. Haugtvedt will be taken to the UND Medical Examiner's Office in Grand Forks, the release said. 

On Thursday, a shoe belonging to Keith Ayers, 28, was found on the shore of Oak Island.

Haugtvedt, Ayers and 24-year-old Cody Joseph Ostendorf were reported missing after their 16-foot Lund boat was found capsized last Saturday afternoon on the northeast corner of Flag Island. The men, all of Baudette, were last seen leaving Sunset Lodge on Oak Island at 12:10 a.m. Oct. 3, according to surveillance video. Oak Island is east of Minnesota's Northwest Angle and more than 20 miles north of Long Point on the lake's souther shore.Discovery of Haugtvedt, originally from Warren, comes after crews searched through land, air and water. About 100 people showed up at Zippel Bay State Park on Friday night for a vigil. Ostendorf grew up in the Twin Cities, while Ayers, a fishing guide, is from Pennsylvania.A GoFundMe page launched is being raised to assist family members of the three men, according to Retina LaValla, a Baudette resident who started the page.
