Riverside area street reconstruction project set to begin this month

The City of Park Rapids notified residents living in the Riverside and Washington Avenue areas the planned street reconstruction project will begin as soon as the ground thaws.
Construction on portions of Riverside Ave., Washington Avenue, Second Street, Third Street, Fifth Street, Sixth Street and various alleys are tentatively scheduled to begin April 13, weather permitting.
The project will replace underground water and sewer lines, curb and gutter, and street resurfacing.
Total cost of the project is $2.3 million, down from the original estimate of $3.3 million, according to city planner Ryan Mathisrud.
The main phase of the project will be street reconstruction and infrastructure replacement of Riverside Avenue south from Highway 34 to Sixth Street.
Washington Avenue, one block to the west from Riverside Avenue, will also see significant reconstruction.
In the first part of the project by C&L Excavating the existing driving surface will be recycled in place, which will essentially convert the existing paved roads into gravel-type roads, this according to the letter sent by the city.
Work in the first couple weeks will be in the Riverside Avenue and 5th Street areas. This will include various tree removals necessary for the work, sidewalk, and curb and gutter removal, underground utility replacement followed by street, driveway, and sidewalk restoration.
In the following weeks, according to the letter, the work will continue to Washington Ave., 3rd Street and 2nd Street.
The project is tentatively scheduled for substantial completion in the late summer or early fall. Remaining cleanup items and the last lift of pavement will be installed in 2016.
Progress meetings will be held every Thursday at the River Heights Apartments on Riverside Ave. at 10 a.m.
Representatives from C&L Excavating and Apex Engineering Group will be on site at all times during the project.
A temporary water system will be utilized during the watermain replacement.
