Minnesota deputy sheriff transported to Twin Cities hospital after freak accident in Mexico

ELBOW LAKE, Minn. - A west-central Minnesota community is rallying around a popular county deputy who was injured in a freak accident while on a winter vacation in Mexico.  Grant County Deputy Jeff Edwards had to be airlifted to a Twin Cities Hospital from Mexico this past week and is beginning his recovery from neck and back injuries.

Grant County Deputy Jeff Edwards suffered a spinal cord injury after a large wave threw him to the ocean floor. He never lost consciousness and was able to breathe, but he was not able to move. Edwards was airlifted to the Twin Cities at a cost of $30,000.

The Army veteran and volunteer firefighter had surgery and is out of the intensive care unit.

While there is paralysis, time will tell what movement he gets back below his chest. He does have arm movement.

A benefit for the county deputy is planned soon.
