FARGO – A Fargo woman faces felony charges after being accused by police of causing a three-car crash on Aug. 3 when she ran a red light while driving drunk and texting at the same time.

Megan Marie Spiekermeir, 29, was recently charged in Cass County District Court with one count of criminal vehicular injury, a Class C felony.

Court documents state that officers responded about 8:28 a.m. to the three-car injury crash at 45th Street and 40th Avenue South.

A man who was driving a pickup hit in the crash was being loaded into an ambulance to be taken to the hospital when Fargo police Officer Jason Abel arrived on the scene.

A police report states Abel interviewed Spiekermeir, who was sitting in the driver’s seat of her car, which had significant front-end damage.

Spiekermeir was bleeding from her right knee, Abel reported, and had bloodshot, watery eyes and smelled of alcohol.

Abel administered a breath test on the scene, and then asked her to take a blood test at Essentia Hospital, where she was taken by ambulance.

At the hospital, the police report states, Spiekermeir told Abel she could not remember anything about the accident other than that she had been southbound on 45th Street. She could not remember the color of the light when she entered the intersection.

The report states that Spiekermeir continued to text on her cellphone while waiting in the hospital emergency room, and while hospital workers were wheeling her out to perform tests.

The police report states Abel was told by another Fargo police officer, Michael Kjera, that Spiekermeir admitted to him she had been texting before the accident.

A toxicology report filed with the criminal charges states Spiekermeir’s blood alcohol content was 0.209 percent. The state’s legal driving limit is 0.08 percent.

A criminal summons was issued for Spiekermeir Wednesday. Her first court appearance is set for Oct. 16.
