Plumleys purchase Bullwinkle's in Nevis

Kathy Plumley, growing up in the hospitality business in Nevis, has shifted gears from municipal liquor store manager to restaurateur, purchasing Bullwinkle's on Highway 34.

Husband Gary motivated the move, she said. Kathy went to work at the muni in 1985, serving as manager from 1991 to 2009.

But she's no stranger to the restaurant industry; her parents owned the Nevis Café, where city hall now stands. Her first job out of high school was as a waitress at the former local eatery, Mr. Ed's.

The interaction with people is the lure, she said of the restaurant and bar.

"She has a great way with people," Gary said. "And she enjoys the hospitality industry. It was time to move on."

"Sitting home for two months," after her resignation as muni manager and prior to closing on the purchase of the restaurant, "I was ready to climb the walls," she said.

"I didn't know a car accident had happened until I got the paper," Kathy said of the hour-by-hour updates she'd hear at the liquor store.

The menu will remain the same as developed by former owner Becky Norton, with lunch specials added.

The lunch and dinner menu includes appetizers, sandwiches and freshly-ground, half-pound hamburgers. The Bullwinkle burger is considered the piéce de résistance, with the bacon cheeseburger running a close second.

Plans call for addition of an outdoor cooker for ribs and prime rib. Quarter- and half-chicken dinners are also in the planning stages. Breakfast may be added next spring.

The bar area features a big screen TV with all the sports channels available. Karaoke will entertain every other Saturday, beginning with Uff Da Days, Aug. 29.

An in-house pool league plays Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the possibility of a traveling pool league forming Monday and dart league on Wednesday.

The community has supported the change. "We've been busy since opening," Kathy said.

The restaurant opens at 9 a.m. Monday through Saturday and noon on Sunday.
