A fire Monday evening in a south Grand Forks apartment cleared out the complex and wrecked one unit, doing nearly $100,000 damage and displacing 10 people or more.

Fire Burns Down New York Mills business
After 8:00 pm Sunday, firefighters were called the Mills Meat Locker on Centennial Drive.
Amanda and Whitman Briard own the business.
Fire fighters say when they arrived there was a lot of smoke.... Then something flashed-over and the fire grew.
It’s not clear what started the fire, but crews say it was difficult to control and there won’t be much to salvage from the building.
Fire departments from Perham, Ottertail, Deer Creek and Bluffton provided mutual aid.

Verndale school evacuated for smoke threat
Verndale students and staff were evacuated from the school building Tuesday afternoon. Verndale fire chief Don Weniger said smoke in the wood shop, which may have been caused by a spark from a saw blade striking a nail, ignited some sawdust. No damage was done to the building. The school was evacuated but classes resumed for the seventh hour.
