Akeley’s railroad trestle being dismantled, to be replaced with metal structure After a couple of weeks of prep work, the former Akeley railroad trestle, now a component of the Heartland Trail, was taken being taken apart Monday. The 1927 trestle will be replaced with a lower metal bridge, with work expected to be completed by November, or before, according to Robert Folstrom, project superintendent. The existing 314-foot structure was capable of holding 1,500 pounds, the new 10-foot wide bridge will carry 10,000 pounds, accommodating a snowmobile groomer. Derrick Alvarado of Naytahwaush and Winston Wadena Jr. of Waubun (above) were among the Grand Forks-based Swingen Construction crew members.
