The Northern Light Opera production of “West Side Story” opened to a sold out crowd Friday at Armory Square in Park Rapids. Led by local and regional actors and musicians the musical brought to Park Rapids the 1950s street life of New York City. “West Side Story” depicts friction between Puerto Rican and mainland youngsters on an asphalt background. The famous balcony scene – between modern-day Romeo and his Juliet – is played on a fire escape by characters Tony and Maria. “West Side Story” is a tough, contemporary story, spliced with love, and as modern as tomorrow’s headlines.
