Community Band rehearsals begin

The Park Rapids Area Community Band (PRACB) is underway with practices for their spring concert.

The Park Rapids Area Community Band (PRACB) has begun rehearsals for its spring concert and is welcoming new members.

Myroslava Hagen, guest artist and Yamaha clinician from Salt Lake City, Utah, will travel to Park Rapids as a guest soloist with the PRACB for the spring concert Sunday, May 18. She will perform a solo during both the first and second half of the concert. In addition, she will provide a master class for clarinet students and interested adults from Park Rapids and surrounding communities on May 15 and 16. The May 15 master class will be at 2 p.m. in the Park Rapids Area High School auditorium and at 6 p.m. May 16.

Hagen studied with PRACB conductor Dr. Russ Pesola at Concordia College in Moorhead while he was director of the bands there. His respect for her abilities and professional development spurred him to invite her to solo with the community band. Her return to the area will provide Park Rapids students and community musicians with a rare opportunity to learn from a professional-level artist in a master class. The master class setting is helpful to teachers and students alike, as the educator can model methods of instruction as she works with the specific problems presented by the students. Hearing a top-level player gives students a fresh approach and expands their horizons. Clarinetists in the PRACB will also likely attend the class, which will be open to anyone in the area.

Hagen’s husband Scott, who is director of bands at the University of Utah, will also be returning to Park Rapids for the concert. Many people in Park Rapids will remember Scott, who is the son of Don Hagen, the high school band director in Park Rapids for over 25 years. Scott will be guest conducting at the spring concert.

New members are welcome to join the PRACB and another bassoonist is especially needed. If someone plays bassoon but doesn’t have an instrument, the band has a bassoon that can be used. The band also needs more trumpet players and another French horn player.

The rehearsals leading up to the May 18 spring concert are March 22 and 29; April 5, 19 and 26; and May 15 and 17. All of the rehearsals are held in the Park Rapids Area High School band room at 10 a.m. on Saturdays except the May 15 rehearsal, which is at 7 p.m. Thursday evening.
