Saturday, June 9
The Akeley Garden Club will hold a perennial plant sale beginning at 10 a.m. today (Saturday) at Paul's Patio in Akeley.
The Headwaters Animal Shelter will hold the 4th annual Tails on the Trail Walkathon and Pet Expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at Heartland Park.
The "Lending a Helping Paw" event honors all companion animals, "especially those that help us live a better life."
Contests include most unique pet, owner/pet look alike and best "helping paw" trick.
Demonstrations will be freestyle dog dancing, flyball racing and herding.
Ongoing activities are a micro-chipping clinic, pet photography, kids games, coloring booth, doggy paw art, face painting and a food booth.
Last year, 48 walkers participated, raising $3,064 in pledges. The funds are used to care for the 400 to 450 animals arriving at the shelter each year.
The Park Rapids Area Community Band will present a kick-off-to-summer band concert at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at the picnic grounds by the museum at Itasca State Park.
Rhoda Jackson, a popular local actress, will portray poet Emily Dickinson in "The Belle of Amherst" today (Saturday) and Sunday, June 10 at Long Lake Theater, Hubbard.
Drawing from her poetry, diaries and letters, this charming play vividly brings Dickinson to life. Showtimes are 3 p.m.

The Good Life Café and Nemeth Art Center are partnering to present "Eat Your Art Out," an evening of art, live music and cocktails, from 8 to 10 p.m. today (Saturday) at the Good Life.
The works of local and regional artists will be featured.

The Park Rapids Lions will host the 31st all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, June 10 at the Park Rapids American Legion.
Tickets are available at the door.
Monday, June 11
The Mantrap Valley Conservation Club Auxiliary will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 11 at the clubhouse.
Guest speaker is Steve Maanum who will speak on the migration tracking of loons.

A support group meeting for Celiac disease will be held at 6 pm. Monday, June 11 at Wadena Alliance Church, 1428 Jefferson St.

The Healthy Moms Network of Park Rapids will host a chapter meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 12 at the Park Rapids Area Library.
Guest speaker is Cynthia Ekren, certified practitioner for hypno birthing, the Mongan Method. Hypno birthing teaches women how to eliminate fear so they can experience a calm, comfortable, drug-free birth experience.

Individuals who will be 11 years old in 2012 are invited to enroll in the Minnesota Firearms Safety course to be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, June 14 and 15 at the Environmental Education Building at the fairgrounds in Park Rapids.
Registration will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 13 at the fairgrounds, at which time books will be handed out. All students must register June 13 in order to participate.
There is no maximum age limit for participants taking the course.
Topics covered will include safe firearms handling and care, hunter ethics and responsibility, wildlife management, field testing and other topics.

St. Joseph's Area Health Services Auxiliary is hosting a Flag Day picnic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday June 14 at the Park Rapids American Legion.
The menu is sloppy joes, potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, pickles, dessert and beverages.
All proceeds will go toward the Auxiliary's recent pledge of $60,000.00 to "Helping Our Growing Area Grow Healthier."
Chapter FQ PEO will meet at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, June 14 at the home of Roxy Wickre.

Two Girls and a Piano - veteran Northern Light Opera performers Gail Haller and Julie Kaiser and accomplished pianist Cheryl Steinborn - will kick off the season, performing from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Thursday, June 14 at Faith Baptist.
They will showcase their soprano voices through Rossini, Gershwin, Menotti, Porter and more.

Friday, June 15
Osage Lions will host White Cane Day from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, June 15 at several Park Rapids locations
White Cane Day is a means to raise money for the prevention of blindness. The Lions will also accept donations of used eyeglasses.
Lions will be at J & B Foods, L & M Fleet, Coborn's Foods, Ace Hardware and Walmart.
The Blank Canvas Gallery and Education Center in Park Rapids will hold a "Photography for Artists" workshop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, June 15 in Park Rapids.
Instructed by Cal Rice, an experienced photographer and teacher, the class is designed for artists to learn how better to photograph their artwork.
Both two-dimensional and three- dimensional subjects will be covered. The skills learned will enable participants to document artwork for brochures, art contests and recording a record of their inventory.
Cancer survivors, family members and volunteers will converge at the Park Rapids Area High School track Friday, June 15 for the 18th annual Hubbard County American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
This year's theme is "Imagine a world with more birthdays - celebrate, remember, fight back."
From 1 p.m. to 1 a.m., more than 20 teams will pace the track in an effort to raise money for cancer research. Teams consist of eight people or more and are expected to raise at least $100 per team member before the walk by asking for donations and selling luminaries for $5 each.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is offering a volunteer training workshop on aquatic invasive species (AIS) from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 15 at Northwoods Bank.
The workshop is for citizens interested in informing the public about AIS and how to slow their spread.

The Mantrap Valley Conservation Club will host a fish fry supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 15 at the clubhouse located 1.5 miles east of Emmaville on CSAH 24.
The menu includes fish, cheesy potatoes, coleslaw, roll, dessert and beverage.
A freewill offering will be received. Donations are used for sponsored projects and renovations.
SATURDAY, JUNE 16
Ruby's Pantry Food distribution will be held Saturday, June 16 at the Assumption of our Lady Catholic Church in Menahga.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. at First English Lutheran Church with the food distribution following at 10:30 a.m. at the Catholic Church.
Cost is $15 per share. Bring baskets and boxes for food. Volunteers are also needed and much appreciated.

The 2012 Lakes to Pines Triathlon is June 16 in Park Rapids.
The fifth-annual triathlon, sponsored by the Park Rapids Swim Boosters, includes a 500-yard swim in the Park Rapids Area High School pool, a 14.7-mile bicycle ride and 5K run.
Participants can compete as an individual or on a two or three person team.
The day of the race, registration opens at 7 a.m. with the race starting at 9 a.m.
A kids triathlon is also part of the event. Ages 9 and under swim 50 yards, bike .48 miles and run .3 miles. Ages 10-12 swim100 yards, bike 1.1 miles and run .3 miles.
The kids races will start at about 11:30 a.m. after the adult triathlon is completed. Awards will be handed out at about noon.

The 12th annual Sebeka Red Eye River Run/Walk will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 16 at Sebeka City Park.
A revised route makes it easier for those with strollers. Family rates are available and grandparents of youth may participate together.

Twisted Stitchers' own Linda Norwood will be demonstrating creating a headband on a simple loom at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 16 at 210 Main Street, Park Rapids (Monika's).
It's a grand introduction to weaving for children, and fun for adults too. She'll show how to make a beaded band - perfect for a headband - using the simplest of looms. It is quick to make, requiring only a dowel or old fishing pole, paper clips, tape, heavy thread, a beading needle and beads.

The Itasca Moraine Chapter has scheduled a 5.2-mile Father's Day hike Sunday, June 17.
Hikers are to meet at the North Country Trail kiosk/parking lot at the intersection of Highwat 64 and East Steamboat Forest Road, 4 miles north of Akeley.
The hike will commence at 1 p.m. and ends at Akeley Cutoff Forest Road, northwest of Akeley.
Tuesday, June 19
A three-day watercolor painting workshop, "Painting Crystal in Watercolor," will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, June 19-21 at he Blank Canvas Gallery and Education Center in Park Rapids.
Instructor is June Young, an experienced watercolorist and well-known teacher. Participants will learn to use the process of glazing to produce a realistic watercolor painting of cut glass crystal. Class members will learn to use the subtle nuances of color and light to make a painting come alive to achieve luminosity.
Wednesday, June 20
An "all swings for Kinship" mini golf tournament will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 20 at Evergreen Gifts and Fun Park.
Golfers can sign up for fun play at 5, 6 or 7 p.m.
Cost is $60 per teams of up to four people. All ages are welcome.
The event features "wacky holes" with prizes and a traveling trophy. All proceeds benefit Kinship.
