Saturday, March 31

Park Rapids Amateur Hockey Associations annual spaghetti dinner and silent auction fundraiser will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 31 at the Century School cafetorium.

The menu includes spaghetti, sauces, salads, garlic toast and desserts.

Monday, April 2

Akeley community members will be sponsoring a blood drive from noon to 5 p.m. Monday, April 2 at the First

Lutheran Church, located on Highway 34 and Pleasant Avenue.

Potential donors can make an appointment to give blood by calling United Blood Services at 800-917-4929.

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and in good health.

Additional height/weight

requirements apply to donors 22 and younger. Donors who are 16 must have a signed permission from a parent or guardian.

Park Rapids summer baseball registration will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 2 and Wednesday, April 4 at Century School.

Age categories are 5-12, Babe Ruth 13-15 and VFW 16 and up.

Firearms safety and hunter education will be offered from 6 to 8:30 p.m. beginning Monday, April 2 in the FACS room at Laporte School.

Students must pre-register with Laporte Community Education to guarantee a spot in the class. Preference will be given to Laporte School District students who are or will be 12 by fall deer hunting season.

Pre-registration forms are available in the Laporte School office, or contact Diane at Laporte Community Education 224-2288 ext. 141 or us.

Parents will need to complete the registration, pay the class fee and provide a copy of the student's birth certificate the first night of


Chapter FJ of the PEO sisterhood will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, April 2 at the Hubbard County Courthouse basement.  

Kathy Ahrens will host the meeting.  Bring a shoe count and change purse for the C3 challenge.  

Those who are unable to attend and bring samples of "crafts" for the spring market in Nevis April 21 are asked to call Kathy.  "Get those fingers busy."  

The Park Rapids chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association (MDHA) will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, April 2 in the Park Rapids Area Library basement meeting room.

Tuesday, April 3

Headwaters Center for Lifelong Learning continues its exploration of the future by delving into what Hollywood believes is in the future.

Screenwriter and producer Lara Gerhardson will provide tools with which to view this year's Red Bridge Film Festival selections from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3 at Northwoods Bank in Park Rapids. 

     Her talk will focus on the filmic elements that are used to represent the future - how they influence audience reaction and what kind of future the films paint.

Gerhardson will discuss the elements that are similar to the films that will be shown at the Red Bridge Film Festival. She will also examine the differences, where applicable, and possible motivations for what these differences intend to indicate to the audience.

The festival's movies this year are "Gattica" (1997), "Blade Runner" (1982), "Ghost in the Shell" (1995), "District 9" (2009), "Adjustment Bureau" (2011) and "Metropolis" (1927).

Gerhardson studied film production at Boston University and English and American literature and language at Harvard University. She is currently working with Paul Bunyan Broadcasting as weekend radio announcer for Z99.

In 2010 she was screenwiter and producer for the feature-length film, "Lazarus."  Through KG Productions in Bemidji, Gerhardson has been the producer for Ingenuity Frontier Promotional Spot. As a filmmaker she was director /editor/screenwriter of "The Walkout," "Behold," "Kindling," "One Last Time," "Two Tied," "Buried in Lies" and "Love Words."

Wednesday, April 4

  To help people with an ongoing health condition live fuller, healthier and more active lives, Sanford Health is offering a free Better Choices, Better Health workshop from 9:30 a.m. to noon, Wednesdays, April 4, 11, 18, 25 and May 2, 9 at Bemidji Evangelical Covenant Church.

Effective self-management skills have proven to help people with arthritis, fibromyalgia, heart disease, depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, cancer and those who are overweight or have other ongoing health conditions.

  Participants will learn important skills such as problem solving, goal setting, relaxation techniques and ways to deal with difficult emotions, pain, fatigue and stress. 

Vern and Clair Erickson will present an Easter concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 4 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, located two miles west on Highway 34, right on Eisha Drive.

The Ericksons have been performing holiday concerts for 20 years, their voices harmonizing as brothers do. Each program is planned anew.

They are accompanied by Jana Erickson on a grand piano and by Sharon Erickson on the organ.

Vern Erickson may play a tune on the saw, a unique sound and talent.

Refreshments will be served after the concert, which is free. All are welcome.

Saturday, April 7

Laporte's annual Easter egg hunt will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 7 at the Laporte School commons area.

The event includes candy, prizes and fun for kids 6th grade and younger.

It's sponsored by the Laporte-Benedict Lions Club.

Nevis' Muskie Park will be the site of an Easter egg hunt and bike drawing Saturday, April 7.

The hunt begins promptly at 1 p.m. with registration for the bike drawing preceding the event. Twenty-four bikes will be given away, three boys' bikes and three girls' bikes in four age categories.

The C&C sponsors the egg hunt; local businesses sponsor the bike drawing.

Sunday, April 8

First English Lutheran Church of Dorset is having its 7th annual Community Easter Meal on Easter Sunday, April 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

This free meal is open to anyone in the community and will include ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetable, slaw, roll, and dessert.

Free meal delivery is available by calling the church at 732-9466.  

First English is located at 20252 State 226, Dorset.

Saturday, April 14

The Northwoods Riders OHV Club will hold an annual meeting from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 14 at the Blue Moon Saloon, 48220 Reserve Trail, Bemidji.

Sunday, April 15

St. Theodore's Church in Ponsford-Pine Point will host games of meat bingo beginning at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 15.

Twenty games will be played with 20 winners taking home turkeys, hams and more. A free lunch will be served.

Heading west from Osage, turn north on Co. Rd. 225 to Co. Rd. 129.

The event is sponsored by St. Theodore's Parish Guild.

Saturday, April 21

Lake George Senior Citizens will host a pancake breakfast fundraiser from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday, April 21 at the senior center on Highway 71.

The menu includes pancakes, sausages, fruit and coffee.
