Saturday, Dec. 17

Ruby's Pantry Food distribution will be held today (Saturday) at the Assumption of our Lady Catholic Church in Menahga.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the food distribution following at 10:30 a.m.

Cost is $15 per share.  Bring baskets and boxes for food.  

Volunteers are also needed and much appreciated.  Contact Karol or Dave at 564-4501 for more information or to volunteer.

Park Rapids resident Amy Larson, illustrator of the children's book, "Oh Mighty Mississippi," and author Melissa Vocelka will sign books from noon to 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at Beagle Books.

Also signing at the same

time will be Jeff Berg, the author and illustrator of the

recently-released "Mrs. Claus and the Batty Christmas." 

The Erickson Brothers will perform a Christmas concert at 7 p.m. today (Saturday) at the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

The church is located off Highway 34 West; turn right on Elisha Drive.

Sunday, Dec. 18

The Eagles Club will host a children's Christmas party at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18.

All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Nonperishable food items for the food shelf are welcome.

Lunch will be served to those 12 an under free, 13 and over $1.

Students from Walker Hackensack Akeley High School will be joining the professional music ensemble From Age to Age for a 1 p.m. performance Sunday, Dec. 18 at the Union Congregational Church in Hackensack.

The choir will perform several carols with From Age to Age throughout the concert. Additionally, the choir will join From Age to Age on "Carol of the Bells",  and PDQ Bach's "O Little Town of Hackensack".

Tickets will be available at the door.

Tuesday, Dec. 20

ITOW Veterans Museum in Perham will host a Christmas open house from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20.

A key feature of the afternoon will be a gallery reception for the newest exhibit, Brass Rubbings of the Middle Ages.  

Mark Lehman, who created these rubbings in the 1970s, will be on hand to answer questions.  

At the same time, the White Elephant Thrift Store, located in the ITOW Veterans Museum building, will host a "Kids Shop Free" day.

Any child under the age of 10 can shop free for gifts for their immediate family with a limit of $5.

The Antique Tractor Club will meet Tuesday, Dec. 20 on the club grounds.

The board meeting is 6 p.m. and the general meeting convenes at 7 p.m.

In the event of snow, members will meet in the the Eagles Club basement.

Area high school concerts and Our Lady of the Pines Christmas Mass will be broadcast on KPRM AM 870 and KDKK 97.5 FM at the following times:

n The Park Rapids Area High School Choir concert will be heard at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec 24 on KPRM AM 870 and KDKK 97.5 FM.

n Nevis High School Band and Choir concerts will be re-broadcast at 3:30 p.m. Saturday Dec. 24 on KPRM AM 870.

n Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church in Nevis Christmas Mass will be broadcast "live" starting at about 4:45 p.m. Saturday Dec. 24 on KPRM AM 870

n The Menahga High School concert will be aired at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 24 on KDKK 97.5 FM.

n The Sebeka School concert will be re-broadcast at 3 p.m. Friday Dec 23 on KDKK 97.5 FM.

Tuesday, Dec. 27

With a little help from Mother Nature, Itascatur Club will host two skiing open houses during the holidays.

Open houses are scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27 and Thursday, Dec. 29.

Additional open houses will be the second and fourth Sundays in January and first and third Sundays in February: Jan. 8 and 22, and Feb. 5 and 19.

Enjoy the beautiful ski trails and have a cup of hot chocolate in the warming house. Bring your own skis or check out equipment purchased by the club. A new addition this year is a pulk sled that can be used to pull young children while skiing.

Volunteers will be available to help you get started and answer your questions about the trails.

The ski center consists of 10km of marked and groomed trails through balsam pines and spruce. All trails are groomed classical and skate are designed for beginner to expert skiers.

Soaring Eagle is located 8 miles north of Park Rapids on Hwy 71, across from the Eagle View Golf Course.

A Minnesota Ski Pass is required for all skiers age 16 and over.

Saturday, Dec. 31

The Park Rapids Friendly Squares will host a New Year's Eve dance Saturday, Dec. 31 at the Century School.

Caller will be Larry Johansen and Donna Stone will cue rounds between tips.  

The dance will start at 8 p.m.  Dancers will break for a potluck dinner at 10 p.m.

The club will furnish meat; members are asked to bring a potluck dish.  

Dancing will resume at 11 p.m. until midnight.

Tuesday, Jan. 17

Applications are now available for Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants, open to artists in all art disciplines, any non-profit organization, school (including community education offices) and units of government.

These grants support three areas - arts activities and arts access, arts education and cultural heritage.

Individual artists can apply for grants up to $3,000 and organizations can apply for grants up to $6,000 at the Region 2 Arts Council office, 426 Bemidji Ave., Bemidji, MN 56601 or downloaded from http//

Deadline is Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Projects funded through R2AC's grants programs should have primary impact on and accessibility to residents of Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods, and Mahnomen counties.
