Friday, July 29

Author Jim Proebstle will sign copies of his new book, "Fatal Incident," from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, July 29 at Book World on Main.

The book is inspired by the true events of an Air Transport Command aircraft disaster in Alaska in 1944.

Saturday, July 30

The second annual Tyler Shipman Memorial Car Show will be held Saturday, July 30 on Frazee's Main Street.

Registration is at 10 a.m. with trophies awarded at 3 p.m. The Pontiac Fiero will be featured, but all cars and motorcycles are welcome, classic and new.

When Tyler Shipman was diagnosed with cancer, people from all over the country gathered to restore his 1986 Fiero GT before he died at 18.

A $10 entry fee benefits the Tyler Shipman Memorial Scholarship at Frazee High School.

Sunday, July 31

A turkey dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 31 at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church, Nevis.

The menu includes turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing, vegetables, coleslaw, cranberries and apple pie and ice cream.

Monday, Aug. 1

The Park Rapids chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association (MDHA) will meet Monday, Aug. 1 at the Environmental Education building at the fairgrounds.

The annual potluck picnic will be from 6 to 7 p.m. with a chapter meeting at 7 p.m.

Chapter FJ of the PEO Sisterhood will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1 at the home of Jan Kehr.

 Lois Berghuis will be the co-hostess.  The program will be a celebration of chapter projects. Members are asked to call the hostess with regrets.

Tuesday, Aug. 2

Everyone is invited to join the fun as the Hubbard County Sheriff's department hosts the annual Night to Unite gathering from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2 in the parking lot of the Hubbard County Law Enforcement Center in Park Rapids.

Each year the first Tuesday in August is set aside for communities and counties throughout the state of Minnesota as well as nationally to celebrate local partnerships in preventing crime.  

This is the third year that a free community dinner and celebration event has been hosted by the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Cory Aukes will be on hand to meet residents and visitors along with every unit of the sheriff's office. They will be joined by other local public safety agencies, including the Sheriff's Mounted Posse, North Memorial Ambulance, Park Rapids Police, Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota DNR, and fire departments from Park Rapids, Nevis, Akeley, Lake George and Laporte.  

Deputy Dan Kruchowski will be introducing the newest member of the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office, his new K-9 partner Oakley, to the public.

Plans call for demos by Oakley throughout the Night to Unite event.  

The Hubbard County Explorers Post will again host a dunk tank to collect donations for K-9 program.  Many local "celebrity" volunteers will be taking turns in the tank, including Aukes and other members of the law enforcement community.

A special Child ID Station will be set up to provide a finger-print identification packet for every child.
