Upcoming events May 20 - June 5

Thursday, May 20

Hubbard County Veteran Services officer Greg Remus will be at Lakeport Town Hall/Fire Hall from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, May 20.  He will be available to answer questions regarding veterans benefits.

The North Country Regional Hospital Diabetes Resource Center (DRC) will hold its monthly diabetes support group meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 20 in NCRH conference room C.

An adult first aid class will be offered from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, May 20 at the Frank White Education Center. 

The class will cover principles, medical and injury emergencies and environmental emergencies.

Saturday, May 22

A reception for students exhibiting their works at the North Country Museum of Arts will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 22.

Awards will be presented. The public is welcome.

The Park Rapids Dance Club will dance from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 22 at Blueberry Pines.

Appetizers will be served throughout the evening. Tickets are available at Beagle Books. All are welcome.

Sunday, May 23

First City Squares of Bemidji will host a square dance from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 23 at the United Methodist Fellowship Hall, 9th and Beltrami. 

Plus tips will be in the first half-hour. Roger McNeil will be the caller and Bernadette McNeil will be cueing rounds.

Retired nurses, home health aides and members of the community are invited to Living at Home's respite training to be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 24.

This training will prepare volunteers to stay with frail, elderly or memory-impaired people in order to give their family caregivers a break.

Registration is required. Call 732-3137 to register or with questions.

John Carlson, the endorsed Republican candidate for Minnesota Senate Dist. 4, will be making stops Monday, May 24 at 4 p.m. at Steve and Jill's in Nevis at 5:30 p.m. at 5:30 p.m. at the Akeley Senior Citizens Center and at 7 p.m. at the Laporte School.

Tuesday, May 25

The class of 1980 will hold a reunion planning meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 25 at The Good Life Café.

Classmates for whom addresses are needed include Lisa Gamm, Chris Gribble, Jeff Hanneman, June Knutson, Val Larson, Rob Neste, Deb Phelps, Jim Schrader, Greg Smith, Dale Stevens and Debbie Stout.


Lamplighter Community Theatre (LCT) will hold auditions for Gilbert and Sullivan's light, comic opera, "Pirates of Penzance," at 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, May 24-27 at Centennial Auditorium in Staples.

"This is one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most famous operas, full of pirates, sword fights, Keystone cops, lovely daughters and, of course, memorable music," said Brenda Halvorson, member of the LCT board. "We're excited to be offering something so fun and different to the community."

High schoolers through adults can audition for primary parts and chorus parts. Everyone must prepare a piece of music for the auditions.

Tuesday, May 25

A cardio pulmonary resuscitation class will be offered from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 25 at the Frank White Education Center.

This course teaches CPR and relief of choking for adults, children and infants

The use of barrier devices for all ages will be covered. Participants will receive a completion card.

Thursday, May 27

Seniors are invited to learn to surf the Web from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 27 at the Park Rapids Area Library.

Computer basics and using the Internet will be addressed.

Space is limited; call the library at 7324-966 to reserve a space. There is no charge for the training.

Friday, May 28

The Friendly Squares will host a square dance Friday, May   28 at the Century School in Park Rapids. 

There will be a "plus" workshop from 7:30 to 8 p.m., mainstream dancing from 8 to 10 p.m. The caller will be Roger Lueth with Donna Stone cueing rounds between tips. 

Club members will furnish a potluck lunch.  Greeter will be Karen Lueth; servers will be the Benjamins. 

All dancers and spectators are welcome.

Saturday, May 29

The Park Rapids Garden Club plant sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 29 at Summerset Flea Market, Highway 34 east, Park Rapids.

This is the club's annual scholarship, grant money and community gardening events fundraiser.

Monday, May 31

The Wolf  Lake chapter of the Minnesota Finnish American Historical Society will host a pancake breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, at the Wolf Lake Lions Hall. 

The menu will include pancakes, ham and homemade fruit syrups. 

A free will donation will help fund scholarships to Salolampi, the Finnish language camp at Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji. Everyone is welcome.

Wednesday, June 2

The ninth annual St. Joseph's Area Health Services Foundation golf benefit will be held Wednesday, June 2, at Blueberry Pines Golf Club.


Swing a golf club.

Volunteer on the registration table or food crew.

Listen to the Upper Mississippi Dixieland Swing Band.

Watch the helicopter ball drop.

There are many ways to support this fundraiser, which benefits St. Joseph's Hospice program and provides scholarships for area students pursuing health care degrees.

By being a sponsor, giving an in-kind gift, playing the 18-hole scramble or volunteering to help, you can be part of the community celebration.

Registration is at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. The helicopter ball drop is at 5:30 p.m. with a chipping contest at 6 p.m. and closing ceremony and barbecue at 6:30 p.m.

Community support helps Hospice make over 3,000 home visits to more than 100 families in our area and provides scholarships to selected area college-bound students.

Contributions to St. Joseph's are charitable donations.

Saturday, June 5

Celebrate National Trails Day Saturday, June 5 with a guided hike on the North Country National Scenic Trail with the Laurentian Lakes chapter.

The hike begins at 1 p.m. at the Old Headwaters (Clearwater CSAH 39) Trailhead.

This is an easy to moderate hike with shuttle service for 4 miles on the North Country National Scenic Trail between the Old Headwaters and Highway 113 trailheads.

The western portion of the hike follows the north/south continental divide in northeastern Becker County. This includes an unnamed 1,700-foot hill with views for miles, including Tim-Don-Del Hill eight miles to the east.

A chapter meeting follows at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. at Bad Medicine Resort.

An RSVP for the roasted chicken family style dinner is required by Monday, May 31.
