Nevis sophmore Natalie Hilden won the “Best of Show/Judge's Choice” in sculpture March 25 at the Section 8A MSHSL Visual Arts Festival in Fosston. Of 154 artworks, only nine won this award. Her art will advance to the State Art Show at the Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley May 9-16, with a closing reception and program on May 16. Glued together and drawn on with marker designs, Natalie's sculpture, entitled "Entangled Zentangles," is made out of an old soccer ball, an x-box controller cover and a cut-out bird form is the base. “When I look at my sculpture, I see some very important things from the last year of my life,” said Hilden. “To me, my intention was to represent passion, struggle, perseverance and beauty. I used the Zentangling technique with sharpies to entangle my items with that one common factor. I also had to glue all the pieces up onto the base. All the items have ‘entangled’ my life." Nevis artists receiving “superior” ratings were Kailee Bjorkstrand, Leo Keiser, Samantha Wormley and Natalie Hilden. Faustina Gray, Ruby Vedbraaten, Joscelin Eischens, Justin Dinh, Kyrsten Sauser, Leo Keiser and Winter Post earned “excellent” ratings for their artwork.
