Park Rapids We Decide youth group members presented a PhotoVoice gallery Wednesday showing a collection of photos showing contributing factors to the use and non-use of alcohol by youth.

A PhotoVoice gallery is a tool that shows storytelling through photos instead of words.

Park Rapids students showed positive places in the community where alcohol isn’t present such as Panther sports events and local diners that are family friendly.

They also showed areas of concern such as the old Heartland Trail railroad bridge where youth have been known to hang out and drink alcohol.

Wednesday’s event coincided with parent/teacher conferences at the high school so parents could stop and look at the photos while they were at the school.

We Decide is a branch of the Hubbard in Prevention (HIP) Coalition, is funded through a grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division in partnership with St. Joseph’s Area Health Services. Beth Heltunen, Hubbard in Prevention grant coordinator, said a number of people stopped by to look at the PhotoVoice gallery and find out more information about Hubbard in Prevention. Grandparents were interested, along with parents and others in the community.

For more information about the coalition or perhaps become a member, contact Heltunen at 255-3692 or visit the website at
