One-act play competition Saturday

The Park Rapids Area High School Drama Department will host the Minnesota State High School League 24A sub-section one-act play competition Saturday, Jan. 26 in the high school auditorium.

Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and plays begin at 9 a.m., featuring casts from Laporte, Menahga, Nevis, Park Rapids and Verndale high schools.

The public is welcome; there is no charge "for a terrific day of entertainment."

First and second place schools will advance to the Section 6A contest Saturday, Feb. 2, also to be held in Park Rapids.

Park Rapids students' "Once upon a time..." play, "The Secret in the Wings," is a dramatic intertwining of rarely told fairy tales by Charles Perrault and The Brothers Grimm.

The allure of these original fables reaches well beyond the nursery. They probe the magic and macabre of folklore, exposing the dark side of the human psyche. Mary Zimmerman leads us on a captivating voyage into our collective childhood subconscious, offering us an appreciation for the grim side of "happily ever after".

The cast of characters includes Sarah Schultz as Mother, Brandon Haller as Father, Kate Westphal as Heidi, Lewis Johnson as Mr. Fitzpatrick, Nate Carlson as first prince, Noah Schulz as second prince and Nick Schulz as third prince.

Jimmy Farmer assumes the role of ambassador, Madison Griffith is a nursemaid, Michelle Farle, Emily Grimes and Tracy Matheny are queens and Jena Stewart, dead child.

Crew members include stage manager Laura Eloranta, lights Dani Lockrem, sound Katy Spears, props Lisha Guisinger and crew Joe Bannerman.
