Remembering Hawaii

in Heartland Manor

she gazes at wheat fields

from the window of her room

sees ocean touching white clouds

the island beyond the curtain of confusion

she is trekking down the cliff to Secret Beach

the rhythmic crash of waves

growing louder with her descent to the shore

the whisper of wing brushes her forehead

an albatross swooping

then soaring to its cliff-side nest

a flash of joy breaks into her emptiness

a fleeting smile . . . a gasp

she discovers a perfect shell

runs her hands through the puka,

auger, and Hawaiian olive shells

cradles each cone and cowrie . . . fondles the feather

in the coconut-leaf basket in her lap
