The Park Rapids Fire Department attempted to retain bragging rights as well as the traveling loon trophy from the 2011 Water Wars competition in downtown Park Rapids. However, the fire department wives brought their game faces to Thursday night's competition and were successful as they faced off against their counterparts in the final round. The ladies were the crowd favorite and the support helped them claim this year's trophy. To add insult to injury, the loon that has ridden in a fire engine the past year as a good luck charm was unceremoniously plucked out of the dashboard and handed over to the wives. There were unsubstantiated claims the firefighters threw the match so that home life would be harmonious, but the women legitimately won.
