Of the 21 students that competed at the Section 29 Sub-Section Speech Tournament, Park Rapids advanced 11 to Sections last week.

They were Dani Lockrem, Dramatic Interpretation; Michelle Farlee and Lewis Johnson, Noah Schulz and Madison Griffith, Duo; Kalee Holland, Extemp Reading; Katelyn Warmbold, Extemp Speaking; Sarah Schultz and Rachel Konshok, Storytelling; Myah Schultz, Humor; and Olivia Fischer, Prose.

Of those 11, five are slated to compete at the MSHSL State Class A Speech Tournament this Friday, April 20, in Chanhassen. Those five are Sarah Schultz in Storytelling and the two duos, comprised of Noah Schulz and Madison Griffith, and Michelle Farlee and Lewis Johnson.

Capping off the successful season, students who comprised this year's team and their parents will be attending the annual Awards Banquet, held this year Tuesday, April 24 at Faith Baptist Church, featuring a catered meal by Theresa Henderson. Following the meal, the community is invited to attend our Speech Showcase, which will begin at 7:15 p.m. in the auditorium of Faith Baptist Church, 1505 South Park Avenue. Admission is free, but there will be an opportunity to donate to the Speech program, which will help to ensure its continued success.

Much of this year's success is due to the efforts of the fine coaching staff comprised of Deb Davis, Assistant Varsity Coach; Emily Schueller, Junior High Coach; and Sandy Aldrich, Volunteer Coach. David Overly completed his second year as Head Coach. Invaluable support was provided by parents and families of the coaches and students, in many ways, making it possible for the more than 40 students to practice and compete throughout the season.

The coaching staff will be presenting a Speech Camp for students this coming Aug. 21-23 at the high school. See the summer Community Ed brochure for more information.
